Citrus is one of the stars of November, along with squashes, Braeburn apples and tip top brassicas.
FRUIT
Braeburn apples (pictured below) have joined russets, Cox, Gala and Bramleys. English Comice and Conference are also plentiful.
Clementines and oranges from Spain bring a splash of colour. Kaki fruit (below right) is another Spanish import worth a look.
Brazil is sending their mangoes, paw paws and melons. The first Brazilian grape is also available, although the last of the Italian, Spanish and Greek are still on hand. Pomegranates are a good buy and eating well.
For soft fruit, British raspberries are still available and eating well. Blackberries, blueberries and red currants are from further afield.
VEG
English salads are edging out, although watercress remains a highlight. All the English brassicas are firing on all cyclinders, including cabbages, kale, broccoli, caulis, Brussel sprouts and their tops. Kohl rabi is worth considering for something a touch more unusual. Green and purple varieties are both available. Beautiful rainbow chard will add some colour to the plate.
Roots are on good form, too – Piccolo parsnips and Chantenay carrots are both very popular. Spuds include interesting heritage varieties such as Highland Burgundy.
From the Continent, options include artichokes, globe and white courgettes, fennel and baby veg.
Squashes in all shapes, sizes and colours are abundant. See are Seasonal Highlight post for more info.
EXTRAS
Italy is sending their excellent winter leafy veg and salads. These include Puntarelle (pictured above left), Cime di Rapa and raddichios of all kinds. China is the main sender of chestnuts. Nearly all wild mushrooms are available.
