It’s might be weirdly warm here in Britain, but on the market all your classic January produce is ready and waiting.

Fruit

blood-orangeLychees

Citrus is the big highlight: the first blood oranges; lovely Navels from Spain, clementines and leafy lemons. If you get in quick, there’s still Seville oranges, too – see our latest Seasonal Highlight. Lychees are down in price. Pomegranates and quinces are also a good call.

ApplesOranges

Don’t forget English apples. Out of cold store, they are still eating very well. Main varieties include Braeburn, Cox and russets. Stone fruit from South Africa is rushing in, now. This includes peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots. They will improve in eating quality over the course of the month. Note that the first Yorkshire forced rhubarb will be along very soon.

Veg

Purple sproutingRomanesco

Brassicas are strong: purple sprouting; cabbage; kales include Cavolo Nero; Brussel sprouts; and Romanesco cauliflower. Carrots include bunches and Chantenay – including a multi-coloured mix. The very first Jersey Royals are available by special order but are very expensive right at the start of their season.

Extras

ChestnutsWild mushrooms

Chestnuts remain in season, along with a wide array of wild mushrooms, including Cep, Pied Bleu and Trompette.
