August offers up an abundance of fruit – both home grown and from further afield. The first English plums are with us. English cherries also a highlight.

Get in there quick for English cherries they won’t be around for long. Note it has not been a cracking season. Spanish stone fruit is an essential buy. We now have flat (‘donut’) nectarines as well as flat peaches. Apricots are very well-priced. Plums also a winner, including greengages. The first cobnuts are over from France.

For soft fruit, English strawberries, blueberries and terrific Tulameen raspberries. The first blackcurrants, too. Gooseberries are a little scarce.

It’s watermelon season – they are in the prime this month, alongside other melons, too. Also lovely honey mangoes from Pakistan and black figs from Spain.

Spuds include Jersey Royals. There’s some British purple sprouting, plus excellent bunched carrots, beets and spring onions. A full range of tomatoes are available, too, and full of flavour

English salads are in full flow. Why not order some edible flowers for a splash of colour? Don’t forget good old Bramley apples, too, for your summer desserts. SpinachBramley apples
